When Should You File Your Taxes? Thresholds & Obligations

Updated: 8 November 2026 Independently fact-checked.

Basic principle: when is tax charged?

Tax is charged on chargeable income, which is Aggregate Income less tax reliefs. If the result is RM0 or less after rebate, no tax is payable. (Source: HASiL — Tax Reliefs (Individuals) — R1.)

Individual relief (self + dependants) is RM9,000 (Source: R1, item 1). In addition, a RM400 rebate is given for chargeable income of RM35,000 or less (refer to the related brief on tax rebates/zakat).

Non-taxable threshold

The non-taxable threshold is the level of income at which reliefs (including the RM9,000 individual relief and other reliefs) and the RM400 rebate make tax zero.

This item still awaits official confirmation from HASiL — check again with HASiL before deciding.: the non-taxable threshold figure (e.g. RM37,333 / RM48,000 depending on the type of assessment) was not extracted directly from official pages at this review — verify from official HASiL documents (e.g. Explanatory Notes / FAQ) before publishing any numeric table. The calculation principle above is confirmed; the specific threshold figures are not.

Distinguish: "no tax payable" vs "no need to file"

These two things are different:

  • If your tax amounts to RM0, you may still need to file in certain circumstances (see below).
  • Example: if you need to claim a refund (e.g. excess PCB withheld by your employer), you still need to file even if you are below the threshold.

Circumstances that require filing

You need to file an income tax return if:

  1. Your income exceeds the threshold (non-taxable).
  2. You receive a notice from HASiL to file.
  3. You have non-employment income (rent, business, and others).
  4. You claim a refund or reliefs.
  5. Other statuses per HASiL guidelines.

This item still awaits official confirmation from HASiL — check again with HASiL before deciding.: the full list of circumstances requiring filing needs to be verified from the Explanatory Notes for Form BE (G1/G2) at fact-check.

TIN registration

Registration of the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and e-Daftar is done through the MyTax portal. (Source: HASiL — MyTax Portal — R2.)

Consequences of not filing

If you are required to file but do not do so, you are exposed to HASiL enforcement action including penalties and charges (see the related brief on penalties and appeals). Do not ignore filing notices from HASiL.
